The annual fish fry for the Power Squadron was Henry Henningsen’s idea. He would get up at 5:00 on the morning of the event and go to Mayport and meet the ships coming in with their catch. He then would smell the fish for freshness. He said that if he could smell it that the fish was not good.
Heny was from Oslo Norway. When he was 16, he was asked to call a number and let them know the German ship were in port. He did not know who he was calling and while he was dialing the SS troops were walking in the street.
Many years later on one of his trips back to Norway he was given a medal from the king of Norway for his bravery in making the phone calls. The phone he was dialing was the resistance.
Henry and his wife Betty were regular members of the squadron. His wife was in the auxiliary and did many helpful things for the squadron.
